8/1/03 @ 6:09 p.m. Symptoms of Gulf War Syndrome?
Two U.S. soldiers have died and more than a dozen have contracted a severe, pneumonia-like illness after serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The affected troops were stationed throughout Iraq with different units. Some experts fear this could become a new version of Gulf War Syndrome.
According to a news release issued by the Army's Surgeon General, the illness begins in the respiratory system, causing shortness of breath. It then later causes the internal organs to fail one by one.
Officially, 14 soldiers have been recognized to suffer serious effects from this unknown illness. Two have died, nine have recovered, and three are still receiving treatment at Landstuhl Hospital in Germany. The Associated Press says as many as 100 cases have been reported since March.
The Army's Surgeon General has sent two teams to Iraq to investigate the illness. One team is retracing the soldiers' steps; the other is taking soil, water, and air samples.
None of Fort Bliss's 200 soldiers who remain in Iraq have been reported ill.
