Surgeon General to Investigate Soldier Sickness
7/26/2003 7:21:31 PM

(AP)The death of a soldier from central Missouri has prompted an investigation by a special team from the U-S Army Surgeon General's office.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that epidemiology experts will investigate 12 cases of severe pneumonia, including two fatal cases. Specialist Joshua Neusche of Montreal, Missouri, was one of the two troops who died.

Experts will investigate the German hospital where Neusche died and several areas in Iraq where troops have become ill. The experts plan to study the soldiers' medical records and tissue samples as well as soil, water and air samples.

Neusche's parents say they were told their son's kidneys, liver and muscles began to deteriorate after he contracted the illness. He was ill for about two weeks before he died.
