Arrests Amid Demonstrations At Inauguration Friday January 21, 2005 5:58am
Washington (AP) - Inauguration protests continued long after Thursday's inaugural festivities had ended.
The Washington Post says police clad in riot gear arrested 65 people for allegedly parading without a permit in Adams Morgan around midnight. The protesters had spray-painted the encircled "A" symbol of the anarchist movement on buildings.
Police Inspector Diane Groomes tells the Post that members of the group broke out the windows of some restaurants and at least one bank in the 1,700 and 1,800 blocks of Columbia Road.
While most of the protests were peaceful, police reported 14 arrests earlier in the day. Among them was a person accused of setting fire to some trash and an American flag at 13th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.
Others were charged with trespassing or disorderly conduct. Officers had to use pepper spray to scatter crowds near the Willard Hotel and at Seventh and `'D" streets, Northwest.
The Post also says about ten protesters were led away by police after shouting antiwar slogans and unfurling banners toward the end of President Bush (website - news - bio) 's inaugural speech outside the Capitol. Several in the audience threw snowballs at them and chanted "USA! USA!"
