HILLIARD DEFEATED IN ALABAMA. MCKINNEY OF GEORGIA IS NEXT IF WE DON’T COME TO HER ASSISTANCE
by Roy Harvey
The way the new national security state is currently eliminating the last hopes of Arab-Americans in electoral politics in the US is by silencing elected officials who defend their rights. This isn’t being done with storm troopers, nor by a Reich Chancellor outlawing political parties. It is being done quietly, by money and slander: target them one by one, outspend them, put them on the defensive; use ad hominem attacks; call them anti-Semitic; call them terrorists for their support of social and economic justice; when necessary, use vote fraud; it gets worse.
Five-term Rep. Earl Hilliard (D-Alabama) was defeated on June 25 in a Democratic primary. The next likely target is Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney (D-Georgia). It’s easy to target Black (and other) elected leaders: just find an amenable candidate who will slander an incumbent who is opposed to Israeli terrorism by calling them “pro-terrorist.” And it’s natural that Arab-Americans would turn to Black leaders, as they generally represent (or don’t) oppressed people themselves, sympathetic with the Palestinian cause.
The brave Congressman Earl Hilliard was accused by the challenger, Artur Davis, as being “linked to terrorism.” This was, however, only part of the slander. The other was that he was anti-Semitic. And now, with Hilliard out of the way, those who are crafting the new “national security state”* now have one less independent voice to contend with.
I’d forgotten why, strangely, there’s so little support in the House or the Senate for the rights of Palestinians. Everybody can see the U.S. pays for and now, with Bush in office, encourages, genocide. The answer is obvious enough: smear money from the Zionist lobby (or maybe CIA money laundered to the political action groups). Any politician, such as 5-term Rep. Earl Hilliard of Alabama, who dares to express opposition to US support of egregious mass murder and terrorism by the Israelis becomes the victim of Zionist PAC** money.
Hilliard, 60, has been a full-time civil rights activist who has marched, protested and stood up for equal justice all his life. In 10 years, he has earned seniority, serving on two major committees (International Relations and Agriculture); he’s been a champion of the poor, the disenfranchised and working men and women in his district and the U.S. – while at the same time working for an equitable world, an internationalist.
Through the use of Israel Lobby attack commercials, a sufficient number of Hilliard’s constituents were led to believe that support from Arab-Americans was tantamount to getting money from terrorists and/or terrorist organizations. The losers in addition to Hilliard are working men and women of the 7th District, and the rest of us who hold sacred the concept of social and economic justice.
In his book Advise and Dissent (1989), former Sen. James G. Abourezk observed: “Most lobbies, no matter how good they are, fade into insignificance beside the most effective – and vicious – of them all. Israel’s lobby in Washington, known simply as ‘the Israel lobby,’ or, ‘the Lobby,’ has refined to a high art form the techniques of putting pressure on members of Congress and on the administration.” The quote is taken from Stealth PACs: How Israel’s American Lobby Seeks to Control U.S. Middle East Policy, Richard H. Curtiss, 1990.**
In Alabama, the Lobby money frightened enough voters to vote for Artur Davis who is, like Hilliard, African-American. Davis, in Congress, will vote the way the Lobby wants.
The 7th District, which includes Birmingham, naturally thinks of itself as religiously tolerant. Easy for the Lobby to exploit doubt, equating legislative support for some “Arab-American issues” to anti-Semitism. Easy to exploit confusion and fear in those constituents who haven’t figured out yet that the “war on terrorism” is a cruel, gargantuan hoax being used to dismantle our civil liberties and create a police state.
Two years ago, Congresswoman McKinney warned, in an op-ed no major newspaper would print, “Dangerous currents sweeping American domestic and foreign policy.” (see www.adoptcynthiamckinney.com).
McKinney has been a champion of social and economic justice ever since she hit Congress, a decade ago. She needs money and support. Adopt her as your congresswoman, as we at www.snowshoefilms.com have. Call her office: 404 243-5574.
