Governor: Slots Could Raise Money For Schools 5:49PM
Jan 19, 2005 2:30 pm US/Eastern Annapolis, MD. (AP) With legislators and local officials lined up to plead for more money to build schools, Governor Ehrlich issued a pointed reminder today that he could put an additional $ 100 million a year into school construction if the legislature approves slot machines.
He spoke during today's meeting of the Board of Public Works. The meeting is jokingly called the "begathon" -- the day when local governments come ask the board for money for school construction and renovations.
The current state budget contains $100 million for school construction -- less than half of the amount recommended by a task force headed by State Treasurer Nancy Kopp.
Ehrlich says he'll include significantly more than $100 million in the budget he plans to submit to the legislature later today. But without slot machine revenue, he says the state can't afford the entire $250 million.
