Republicans, along with a few Democrats like Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., steadfastly supported the nominee before the 85-13 vote, defending her against attacks from Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., and others regarding her honesty and criticism of her role in shaping the Bush administration's anti-terrorism and Iraq policies. "I am disappointed that Dr. Rice's nomination was caught in the maw of partisan politics," said Sen. Majority Leader Bill Frist. "Dr. Rice obvious qualifications have never ever been in doubt." But Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and other Democrats expressed disappointment at GOP attempts to stifle debate on the nominee and their dismissal of Democratic concerns about Rice's honesty as being driven solely by politics. Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., who voted in favor of Rice for the position but expressed hopeful uncertainly about the nominee, said the no votes were a service to the country because they will make it more likely Rice will be more open than she has been in the past. "I think no votes are likely to encourage candor," Biden said.
