US markets to shut Friday for Reagan funeral Mon 7 June, 2004 17:10 By Brendan Intindola
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stock markets will close this Friday to mark the death of former President Ronald Reagan, several Wall Street sources have said.
Official word of the closure is expected later Monday, the sources said. The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market declined to comment on a possible closure.
While the markets have yet to officially announce the closures, Securities Industry Association guidelines on "unexpected market close" dated April 13, 2004 notes that, over the past 30 years, there have been nine unexpected market closes.
Of those, one of the reasons is a national day of mourning. Friday was officially designated a day of mourning over the weekend by President George W. Bush.
Reagan died at his Los Angeles home Saturday at the age of 93 after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer's disease. A state funeral for the former president will be held at the National Cathedral in Washington, on Friday morning.
