Embracing the pain
The White House has put Bob Woodward's book Plan of Attack on the president's re-election Web site under the heading ‘Suggested Reading.'"
The Wall Street Journal's John Harwood: "It's remarkable, the contrast between how they're dealing with this book and how they dealt with Richard Clarke. ... They're trying to kill this one with kindness, and essentially saying, ‘We embrace this book.' It makes President Bush look good. And some of the assertions about Colin Powell being out of the loop are not exactly accurate."
U.S. News' David Gergen: "The president, himself, is portrayed in fairly sympathetic light, as a man who's asking questions (and) seemed to be exercising intelligence and judgment; that's why the White House has been expressing some pleasure."
Goring the media
Al Gore says the media have "failed to present fact" to the American public about global warming and Iraq.
Gore: "When our grandchildren say to us in our elderly years, ‘Why did you let this happen? Didn't you know?' ... We all support them (soldiers in Iraq), but the fact that they're there stems from a public debate that was one-sided in the extreme that led to our democracy being crippled."
A nod from Clinton
Bill Clinton endorses Israel's intended withdrawal from the Gaza Strip as "quite a good thing" that may advance chances for peace in the Mideast: "Anytime we're stuck in a rut, it's better to do something than nothing."
However, he expressed concern that the Palestinians were not part of the deal: "I like this Gaza move, but is it the beginning or the end?"
Environmentally friendly
Environmental leaders have launched the "Environmental Victory Project" to help elect John Kerry. The coalition includes such groups as the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund and Friends of the Earth. It will focus on Florida, New Mexico, Oregon and Wisconsin with 25,000 volunteers who will knock on 1.5 million doors.
Envirovictory.org will recruit volunteers.
Buzzies
* "Getting out of an unpleasant relationship -- I'm sure Ben Affleck and J.Lo exercised courage." -- Sen. John McCain, on the different kinds of courage
* The Philadelphia Inquirer's Dick Polman writes that the "front-line soldiers" of Florida politics remain so fixated on the 2000 re-count "that they're starting to sound like those Northern Ireland Catholics and Protestants who still haven't gotten over the 1690 Battle of the Boyne."
