Nazis cause embarrassment for royals
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Connections or references to Nazis that have occasionally embarrassed Britain's royal family:
1937 - The Duke of Windsor - the former King Edward VIII - meets Adolf Hitler during a tour of Germany. Suggestions that the duke was sympathetic to Nazis are still a subject of controversy.
1985 - Newspaper reports claim that Baron Gunther von Reibnitz, the father of Princess Michael of Kent, was a member of Hitler's SS. The princess, who gained her title by marrying a cousin of the queen, produces documents showing that her father was an honorary member of the SS and a "nominal" member of the Nazi party.
During that controversy, reports also surfaced that Prince Philip's brother-in-law, Prince Christoph of Hesse, was a senior SS officer and a close aide of Gestapo chief Heinrich Himmler.
1987 - Prince Charles arouses condemnation - and some support - by comparing modern architecture unfavorably to the Nazi bombing of London in World War II. "You have to give this much to the Luftwaffe: when it knocked down our buildings it didn't replace them with anything more offensive than rubble. We did that," he says.
1997 - Prince Philip offends German Chancellor Helmut Kohl by addressing him as "Reichskanzler," a title last used by Hitler.
2005 - Prince Harry photographed wearing a swastika and German military uniform at a costume party.
