UPDATED: 7:11 pm EDT April 8, 2004

WASHINGTON -- Protests are a sign of spring in the nation's capital, and several groups are planning five days of marches and rallies for this month.

Mobilization for Global Justice, Fifty Years is Enough, Pressure Point, and Jubilee USA are among groups focusing on the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Both institutions are marking their 60th anniversaries this year, with their annual meetings in Washington later this month.

The opposition groups have planned demonstrations beginning April 21.

The groups accuse the IMF and World Bank of being secretive institutions, backing policies that exploit developing nations. The groups want the debts of poor nations to be canceled. They also want meetings of both institutions opened to the public.
