From SIMON HUGHES in Paris

FRANCE erupted in anger and shame yesterday as it woke up to the appalling truth that it had voted a Far Right extremist into the final round of its presidential election.

Jean-Marie Le Pen and his racist National Front party is the leper of the civilised world.

But, as thousands of protesters took to the streets in Paris and other cities, they were haunted by the grim knowledge that the only way they can stop the reviled ex-paratrooper coming to power is to vote for a CHEAT instead.

For the man who beat him into second place in Sunday’s first round of the presidential election is Conservative veteran Jacques Chirac, 69, the current President.

And he is accused of taking thousands of pounds in kickbacks from construction companies while mayor of the capital between 1977 and 1995.

The firms were given juicy contracts to build schools — and Chirac is also alleged to have spent an amazing £1million on FOOD while in office.

Police and anti-Le Pen protesters clashed in running battles in Paris yesterday.

Demonstrators hurled rocks and bottles as cops countered with tear gas.

As the battle raged in the capital, the stark choice staring voters in the face when they go to the final round of the polls on May 5 was summed up by a sticker on the forehead of a furious teenage girl in Marseille.

Shut it ... Le Pen demands silence near Paris yesterday
Translated, it said: “Swindle rather than hate. Chirac rather than Le Pen”.

Other banners proclaimed Le Pen Out! and I Am Ashamed To Be French.

Le Pen, 73 — who has called for immigrants to be expelled — took over 17 per cent of the votes in the first round, beating France’s Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, who could barely muster 16 per cent.

He announced that he will retire from politics following Le Pen’s “thunderbolt” result.

Even Chirac only grabbed a modest fifth of the votes.

And, as the rest of the world reeled from the landmark result, it emerged that fewer than seven out of ten voters had even bothered to turn out for the poll.

They are disillusioned by sleaze — and Le Pen’s antieuro stance struck a chord with many.

Thousands voted for him, even though they do not support his anti-gay policies or agree with that the Nazi holocaust was a “detail” of history.

Voters’ shame turned to violence when thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in Nantes and Lyon.

In Paris, hundreds peeled away from a peaceful march toward the Elysee Palace and clashed with riot police.

Bus stops and shop windows — including one at world-famous restaurant Maxim’s — were smashed in the running battle.

Cops are already bracing themselves for May Day mayhem next week when more than 500,000 demonstrators are expected in Paris.

French mainstream parties of left and right are expected to unite and produce an overwhelming victory for Chirac.

But voter Corinne Maillot, 27, of Paris, said last night: “It shows how bad things can get when people decide to make a protest vote at the expense of decent candidates.”

Stunned Bertrand de Lattre said: “I find it very difficult to believe so many people voted for Le Pen.

“It will make the rest of the world think that France is a nation of fascists.”

Jubilant Le Pen boasted on TV that he CAN be president

He said: “I am the best. I am better and better.”
