Those suits allege the company should be liable for claims that villagers were enslaved by Myanmar soldiers during construction of a natural gas pipeline in the 1990s in Myanmar, also known as Burma. Human rights lawyers for 14 villagers also claim that the soldiers murdered a baby, raped women and girls and forced people out of their homes to make room for the pipeline. The Unocal spokesman says discussions on a settlement are continuing and no details are being released. The company has denied any human rights violations took place during the building of the one-point-two (b) billion dollar natural gas pipeline. Copyright 2004 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
