San Ramon-based ChevronTexaco (NYSE: CVX) is said to be considering a purchase of El Segundo-based Unocal (NYSE: UCL) as the nation's big oil companies try to build their oil reserves. Unocal has long been an attractive acquisition candidate because it has substantial holdings of discovered but undeveloped oil and natural gas fields that would be quite valuable to ChevronTexaco, the nation's second-largest oil company after Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) Neither ChevronTexaco or Unocal commented.
