Average National Gas Price Hits Record High

(May 14, 2007)—On the same day President Bush announced he’s ordering his administration to begin regulating vehicle emissions by the end of his term, the American Automobile Association reports that the national average price of a gallon of gas has hit a record high.

Speaking from the White House Rose Garden, the president said Monday the rules would cut gasoline consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles.

The regulatory changes would not require action by Congress.

AAA, meanwhile, says gas prices have hit a new record of more than $3,07 a gallon for regular unleaded.

That's up almost a penny from just Sunday, and above the previous record before that set after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005.

The peak-driving season hasn't even begun yet.

The government last week reported that gasoline inventories rose slightly last week, but remain low by historic standards.

Around the state Monday, prices ranged from as little as $2.71 at a station in Quinlan to as much as $3.30 a gallon at a station in Perryton, according to Texasgasprices.com

Gasoline was selling for $3.27 a gallon at several stations in Dalhart, a popular stop for Texans headed to New Mexico or Colorado.
