Texan assails Johnson Halliburton connection { August 2 1964 } TEXAS RIGHTISTS ASSAIL JOHNSON Dounce Career in State--Book Used as Weapon New York Times August 2, 1964 Page 43 Special to The New York Times HOUSON, Aug. 1 --Right-wingers in Texas have begun their own propaganda drive aimed at beating PResident Johnson in November. The John Birch Society, the Texans for America and their distributors of literature are in the vanguard of the campaign. They have concentrated on President Johnson's political career, particularly as it was seen in Texas. The most effective piece of anti-Johnson literature is a paperback book, "A Texan Looks At Lyndon," by a wealthy, iconoclastic rancher and Texas historian , J. Evetts Haley. It is subtitled, "A Study in Illegitimate Power." Mr. Haley, who is from Canyon in west Texas, is head of Texans for America, an organization whose chief activity has been to challenge as "socialistic" many public school text-books. ............. excerpts ............. By inference, implication and supposition, Mr. Haley alleges that Mr. Johnson has engaged in unethical, unprincipled and illegal practices. Among those who have shared these deals with Mr. Johnson, he says, are Billie Sol Estes, the huge Brown & Root Construction Co. of Houston and George Parr, a southwest Texas political boss.
