Higher food prices, in part due to greater demand for ethanol, helped push the U.S. Consumer Price Index up 0.2% in June.

The U.S. Labor Department said food prices increased 0.5% last month, after having increased 0.3% in May. Milk prices, which were up 3.5% in June, have jumped nearly 10% since the beginning of the year, as a result of higher corn prices, according to some experts.

Up to 20% of the nation's corn crop is being used for the production of ethanol-blended fuel, in an effort to decrease the nation's dependence on foreign oil. Meanwhile, energy prices actually fell by 0.5% in June, after shooting up 5.4% in May.

Core CPI, which is consumer prices excluding the volatile energy and food segments, increased 0.2% in June.
