Arnie boosts Bush campaign

Arnold Schwarzenegger will give George W Bush's re-election campaign a welcome boost when he attends the Republican presidential convention in New York in August, the former actor's staff announced yesterday.

There have been questions over the nature of the California governor's support for the president's campaign and how visible it would be, given Mr Bush's unpopularity in the state and Mr Schwarzenegger's affiliation to its Democrats and independent voters who have embraced many of his policies. In April a poll found that 54 per cent of Californian voters disapproved of Mr Bush's performance.

But despite the political risks, aides said Mr Schwarzenneger would definitely attend the four-day convention. The appearance will also enable him to introduce his political incarnation to much of the nation which knows him chiefly as a film star.

Until now, Mr Schwarzenegger has stepped warily in relation to the president's campaign. While calling for his re-election and accepting the post of honorary chairman of Mr Bush's California campaign, he has turned down offers to make out-of-state campaign appearances on the president's behalf.

But staying away from the four-day convention would have risked snubbing Mr Bush.

"He's definitely going," Patricia Clarey, the governor's chief of staff, told the Los Angeles Times. "No strings attached. Going enthusiastically. He'd welcome the opportunity to do whatever he can to be helpful."

For the Bush campaign, Mr Schwarzenegger's appearance could help to reassure moderate or undecided voters that the Republican Party is also open to voices outside the conservative wing.
