Police target APEC protesters
Chilean anti-riot forces in armoured vehicles fired water and tear gas at protesters in central Santiago on Friday, hours before the arrival of US President George W Bush for a major summit.

Mayhem broke out in the sidestreets and the main boulevard as police sought to crush the demonstrations against Mr Bush and the weekend Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

Military-style police, with helmets and plastic shields, sprayed water as protesters clustered together.

Tear gas hung in the air.

Security forces hauled about a dozen protesters into buses.

"This gathering is not authorised, go away," a loudspeaker blared from an armoured car fitted with water cannons.

Protesters chucked stones at the police vehicles.

"No to APEC. No to Bush. No to capitalism," read one protest banner.

"No to rubbish pay," read another.
