All UT schools to raise tuition rates

AUSTIN -- Students at some University of Texas campuses could be paying as much as 29 percent more in tuition next year, while others will see more moderate increases.

The nine campuses of the University of Texas System on Tuesday released their proposals for increasing the cost of an education. The proposals will be reviewed by the system's Commission on Tuition, which will make recommendations to the UT System Board of Regents for its Nov. 18 meeting.

The Legislature earlier this year voted to allow universities to set their own tuitions to offset budget cuts. The Legislature cut state appropriations to the UT System by 6 percent.

The proposed increases ranged from 29 percent for UT-Arlington next fall to 3.94 percent for the spring semester at UT-Permian Basin. All of the proposed increases are based on current rates.

Opponents argued that tuition increases threaten to freeze the middle class out of an affordable higher education.

UT System Chancellor Mark Yudof disagreed.

"Despite selected and targeted increases in tuition rates, we will keep higher education accessible and affordable," Yudof said.

At the flagship Austin campus, officials have proposed an increase of about 13.3 percent for the spring 2004. UT-Brownsville and UT-Pan American did not request increases for the coming spring semester but will institute increases next fall.

The lowest increase proposal was made by the Permian Basin campus, which has requested a 3.94 percent increase in tuition next spring.

The largest request was from the Arlington campus, where officials have requested a tuition increase of 29 percent of the current rate for next fall.

In El Paso, officials have requested a tuition increase of 28 percent next fall and a 15 percent increase for the spring semester. UT-San Antonio has recommended a tuition increase of 10 percent in the spring and a 25 percent increase in the fall. The Tyler campus is asking for increases of 5 percent next spring and 17 percent in the fall.
