School Chief Wants Private School Operators To Cut Price May 22, 2003 10:23 am US/Eastern
PHILADELPHIA (AP) The head of the School District of Philadelphia said he wants private companies that are running public schools to do the job for less money than they've been getting.
But the money would still be more than the schools got when the school district was running them.
School district leader Paul G. Vallas said he wanted Edison Schools Inc. to get $450 more per pupil than the schools had gotten under school district management, down from $881 extra per pupil currently. Edison runs 20 of the city's schools. He also proposed cuts for three other private managers.
"I want to level the playing field here," Vallas said. "A $450-per-pupil supplement above what others get -- that's as high as we can justifiably go."
