Guatemalan prosecutor flees to US

The prosecutor in Guatemala investigating the killing last year of a Roman Catholic bishop has fled to the United States after receiving multiple death threats.

The prosecutor, Celvin Galindo, left the country with his wife and children and is thought to have sought political asylum from the US authorities.

Mr Galindo is the second prosecutor to cite intimidation as a reason for resigning from the investigation into the murder of Bishop Juan Gerardi.

The Bishop was found blugeoned to death days after publishing a report blaming the military for many of the human rights abuses committed during Guatemala's thirty-six year civil war. A BBC correspondent in the region says that to most Guatemalans, the Bishop's killing closely mirrored the abuses highlighted in his report.

In a BBC interview, the head of the Guatemalan Archbishop's office for human rights, Neri Rodena, said that while Mr Galindo's resignation was regrettable, he hoped the investigation would continue.
