U.S. plans to build experimental bomb

The United States plans to develop an experimental 30,000-pound bomb, the biggest in its inventory, aimed at destroying deeply buried targets beyond the reach of existing bombs, the Air Force said yesterday.

The Massive Ordnance Penetrator, or MOP, would be about one-third heavier than the 21,000-pound Massive Ordnance Air Blast, MOAB, dropped twice last year in tests at a range in Florida.

Among companies that have built ground-penetrating bombs are three of the top U.S. defense contractors, Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Raytheon. Proposals are due by Aug. 16, the armaments center said.

Nursing-home fire safety found lacking

Fire safety problems at nursing homes are widespread and government oversight is lacking, congressional investigators say in a new report.

Nearly 60 percent of all nursing homes in the United States were cited for fire safety deficiencies during their most recent inspections, according to the Government Accountability Office, Congress' investigative arm.

Weaknesses in federal fire safety standards are especially pronounced in the 20 to 30 percent of nursing homes that lack sprinkler systems, GAO said.
