Peacekeeping Institute In Carlisle To Close
POSTED: 4:30 p.m. EDT May 8, 2003
CARLISLE, Pa. -- The U.S. Army's Peacekeeping Institute, which is located in Susquehanna Valley, will close later this year.
The Institute at the Army War College in Carlisle is slated to cease operations Sept. 30 as part of the Army's reorganization plan.
Spokeswoman Lt. Col. Merideth Bucher says the function of studying how to secure peace in post-conflict situations will be transferred to the Army Training and Doctrine Command.
Bucher says peacekeeping operations always have and always will be a challenge to war-fighting units, but he adds it's important to remember the lessons from recent operations, such as the war with Iraq.
Bucher says the elimination of the Peacekeeping Institute will not affect personnel at the War College.
The agency has a staff of 10 people, who have been or will be reassigned. Copyright 2003 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
