US college students attack Palestinian students
Three football players at Guilford College face assault and ethnic intimidation charges after an attack on three Palestinian students, authorities said.
According to court documents, the assaulters beat the victims with their fists, feet and brass knuckles early Saturday and called them "terrorists" while using racial slurs.
Authorities charged Michael Bates, 20; Michael Robert Six, 20; and Christopher Barnette, 21, with ethnic intimidation and assault and battery. They were released Monday on $2,000 bail.
The court documents said at least 15 members of the football team were present. School officials were still trying to determine whether the other 12 were involved in the attack were trying to break it up or were bystanders.
"We've had a very, very unfortunate event, unfortunate conflict among students who actually knew each other, and who had lived and interacted in the same residence hall with no conflict among themselves," school spokesman Nic Brown said Tuesday.
Two of the students who were attacked, Faris Khadar and Osama Sabbah, are students at Guilford. The third, Omar Awartani, is a student at North Carolina State University in Raleigh who was visiting.
