Pakistan military chief denies coup plot

Two senior officials in Pakistan have joined in the condemnation of an article in London's Observer newspaper, which contained allegations of corruption against the Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif.

The army chief of staff, General Jahangir Karamat, strongly denied that the army was planning a coup because of the allegations.

At a late night news conference, the minister of Law, Khalid Anwar, also dismissed the charges that the prime minister had concealed his wealth and failed to pay back large bank loans.

He rejected demands for an independent inquiry.

Mr Anwar accused the opposition of trying to divert attention from corruption charges against the opposition leader, Benazir BhuttoThe state president has received a copy of the two hundred page report on which the corruption allegations were based.
