Army chief assumes power in Pakistan

The army chief in Pakistan, General Pervais Musharraf, has assumed sweeping powers, following the military coup on Tuesday.

An official announcement by the general said the whole of Pakistan would come under the control of the armed forces.

The constitution and the National Assembly have been suspended, and the Supreme Court has been banned from challenging the order.

The announcement came after troops sealed off the National Assembly, where MPs were due to gather tomorrow.

Supporters of the outsted prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, have a big majority in parliament.

Earlier, the coup leaders had been consulting advisors to see if they could install a legally-acceptable successor to the elected administration of Mr Sharif, who remains in custody.
