ISI spy carried attack on Musharraf: Report
PTI[ FRIDAY, MARCH 05, 2004 04:11:24 PM ]

NEW DELHI : The US defence intelligence has said a man who was part of a four-member team that carried out an abortive bid on the life of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf last Christmas was an ISI spy, a media report said.

However, Pakistani officials denied the US claim saying, Mohammed Jameel was an extremist freed by the American forces after the Inter-Service Intelligence cleared him, a report in the South Asia Tribune said.

Jameel and three others had tried to ram two explosive-filled cars into Musharraf's motorcade on December 25 last year as he was returning home in Islamabad . All the four were believed to have been killed in the attempt, along with 12 others, including policemen and bodyguards.

A week after the assassination attempt, Pakistan's Information Minister Sheikh Rashid identified Jameel as a 31-year old militant from Rawalkot in Pak-occupied Kashmir who had gone to Afghanistan to defend the Taliban regime when US forces launched attack on October 2001. He was later captured and kept by the US forces in the Bagram airbase near Kabul .

The journal quoted an unnamed Pakistani official saying, the US forces let Jameel off after the ISI declared him clean. "They (US forces) contacted us for information about Jameel and others and since we had nothing on him, we declared him clean. It was an honest mistake", he was quoted as saying.

But "a US defence intelligence source disagrees. He says Jameel was a captain of Pakistan Army serving in the agency (ISI). He says Jameel was sent to Afghanistan along with other spies to defend the Taliban", the report said.
