Mexico drops charges against mayor

Mexico City, Mexico, May. 5 (UPI) -- Mexico has dropped all criminal charges against Mexico City Mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, ending the ongoing political saga.

The attorney general's office issued a short statement saying their investigation of Obrador was over, El Universal newspaper reported Thursday.

Obrador faced charges stemming from his decision to defy a judge's order in 2001 to halt construction of an access road to a hospital.

His opponents accused him of abusing his office to further his political ambitions. The popular mayor is considered a virtual lock to win the presidency in 2006.

Last month more than a million people flooded the streets of Mexico City in support of Obrador and his presidential aspirations.

The protests and continuing support for Obrador, however, prompted President Vicente Fox to sack Attorney General Rafael Macedo last week for his efforts to bring the mayor to trial.
