Soldiers killed in Kashmir attack
SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir (CNN) --Two Indian soliders have been killed and six others injured after suspected Islamic militants tossed a grenade at a group of paramilitary soldiers in the heart of Srinagar, the summer capital of the Jammu and Kashmir state, police say.
The attack took place Thursday in the crowded Lal Chowk area of the city, a marketplace teeming with people at the time of the incident, around 1:45 p.m. local time, witnesses said.
No group has claimed responsibility, according to police.
The incident comes after a relative lull in the restive region.
Security has been tightened in the Kashmir valley ahead of India's independence day on August 15.
Kashmir has been the cause of two wars between India and Pakistan since their birth as independent countries in 1947.
Pakistan says Kashmir belongs to it while officially secular but predominantly Hindu India also claims the Himalayan province.
India has accused its neighbor of supporting militants who launch attacks on targets in Kashmir and other parts of India.
Islamabad says it provides only moral and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri independence movement.
