Musharraf: I won't wage war
(Filed: 06/06/2002)

Pakistan President Pervaiz Musharraf insisted today he will not start a war with India hours before Pakistan freed a British journalist.

Diplomatic efforts have so far failed to diffuse tensions between India and Pakistan

His comments came as eight people, including four children and two soldiers, were killed by Indian shells in border villages in Pakistan-held Kashmir. Indian security forces also shot dead Mohammed Rafiq Lone, head of the Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islamic rebel group, in Indian Kashmir.

However, president Musharraf emphasised he was seeking a peaceful resolution to the growing tension in Kashmir during talks with US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage.

Mr Armitage arrived in Islamabad today to try and diffuse the situation between India and Pakistan, and will move onto New Delhi tomorrow.

As the talks were taking place Amardeep Bassey, who works for the Birmingham-based Sunday Mercury contacted colleagues to tell them his release papers had been signed and that Pakistani authorities appeared eager to deport him quickly.

The reporter was arrested on May 10 at the Torkham border crossing near Peshawar coming from Afghanistan. He was disguised as an Afghan and had been detained at the border as a suspected Indian intelligence agent.

His release comes as a result of pressure from Reporters without Borders, a journalist's rights organisation.

The 29-year-old, from Wolverhampton, is expected to catch a flight to Dubai this evening.

Trinity Mirror group, which owns the Mercury, rejected the spying allegations.
