There were no reports of casualties from the Indian side and no immediate comment available from Pakistani officials. Gunfire between the two nuclear-armed rivals has become a routine occurrence since a deadly raid on an Indian army camp in mid-May that India blamed on Pakistan-based militants fighting its rule in Indian Kashmir. Almost a million troops from both sides have been involved in a standoff since a raid on the Indian parliament in December that New Delhi also blamed on Pakistan-based militants. The Indian official said Pakistani troops opened fire with mortars and machine guns on Indian positions in the Poonch and Rajouri sectors along the 1,010-km (630-mile) Line of Control that divides the armies in the disputed Himalayan Kashmir region. "The firing started early in the morning and lasted for an hour or so and Indian troops retaliated with mortars and heavy machine guns," said the official, who declined to be identified. The two armies also exchanged heavy machine gun and small arms fire on the international border that divides the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistan but there were no reports of Indian casualties, he said.
