Attack at Kashmir bus station
Thursday, February 5, 2004 Posted: 1224 GMT ( 8:24 PM HKT)

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir (CNN) --At least 17 people were killed in a string of incidents as militants battled the Indian Army in Kashmir.

February 5 is observed by Pakistan as Kashmir Solidarity Day, a national holiday that recognizes the Kashmiri people's struggle against Indian rule.

A roadside bomb exploded, killing four Indian Army soldiers and wounding eight others, police sources said.

The blast occurred in Saller, about 45 miles (70 km) south of Srinagar -- the summer capital of Indian-administered Kashmir.

The soldiers were part of a crew that clears improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and land mines from roadways every morning.

Three of the eight injured soldiers were listed in critical condition at a local hospital. An Army vehicle was damaged in the explosion.

Separately, one junior commissioned army officer was killed and nine militants died in a gunbattle between the Indian Army and militants in a heavily wooded area near Trich, a village in northern Kupwara district.

Plus Jammu and Kashmir police said three other militants had been killed in two other incidents. They gave no further details.

Separatist militants are fighting to establish a separate state in the Muslim-majority state of Kashmir. India has accused Pakistan of supporting the rebels, but the two nuclear powers have recently agreed to open talks to settle their differences over the disputed region.
