U.S. Citizens Strongly Urged to Leave India, Pakistan Wed Jun 5,12:23 PM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Wednesday increased the urgency of its warning to Americans to leave India and Pakistan due to fears of conflict between the nuclear rivals, urging them strongly to get out.
The State Department, which advised Americans not to go to Pakistan May 24 and to think about leaving if they were there, repeated the warning Wednesday but added: "Americans in Pakistan are strongly urged to depart the country."
It updated its May 31 warning on India that urged Americans to leave, saying: "The Department of State warns American citizens to defer travel to India and strongly urges that American citizens in India depart."
It added: "Tensions have risen to serious levels, and the risk of intensified military hostilities between India and Pakistan cannot be ruled out."
The warning added that the State Department had "strongly encouraged" the departure of non-emergency U.S. government staff and their families from India. The last warning only said it had authorized their departure.
