Medics report Israeli fire kills girl in Gaza Mon Jan 31, 2005 11:14 AM ET
GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli army gunfire has killed a 10-year-old Palestinian girl on Monday as she stood with other children in a schoolyard in Rafah refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip, witnesses and medical officials say. An Israeli military spokeswoman had no immediate information on Monday's incident near the border with Egypt, where soldiers and militants have frequently clashed during a four-year-old Palestinian uprising.
Witnesses said Noran Deed was lining up with classmates to enter their school in the morning when she was shot by gunfire from the army's Termit post, some 900 metres (yards) away.
"She suddenly screamed and fell to the ground, bleeding. The girls started to run everywhere," one witness said.
Doctors at Rafah hospital, where the 10-year-old was pronounced dead, said she was shot in the head.
Violence has dropped sharply in the Gaza Strip over the past two weeks following efforts by new Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to coax militants into a ceasefire.
Palestinian security forces have deployed across the occupied territory in a sign of Israeli-Palestinian cooperation, but they have not been stationed near the flashpoint Termit post, local residents said.
