Gaza Bomb Kills Israeli as Abbas Discusses Truce With Hamas
Jan. 19 (Bloomberg) -- A Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up at the Gush Katif junction in the central Gaza Strip, killing an Israeli security officer and wounding eight soldiers and security personnel, the Israel Defense Forces said.
The attack took place late yesterday when the man detonated explosives strapped to his body while he was being searched at a checkpoint, the Defense Forces said today on its Web site. A military officer and four soldiers, as well as three members of the General Security Services, were wounded, it said.
The Palestinian group Hamas said it carried out the attack in a statement only hours before Mahmoud Abbas, the new Palestinian Authority president, held talks with the group on ending attacks on Israelis, the Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz reported on its Web site.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suspended contacts with the Palestinian Authority after a Jan. 13 suicide bombing at the Karni checkpoint between Israel and Gaza killed six Israeli civilians. Sharon has said the new Palestinian leadership must stop groups carrying out terrorist attacks against Israelis if it is to become a partner in the peace process.
Sharon told the Israeli Cabinet Jan. 16 he has told the military to take ``any action'' necessary to stop Palestinian attacks on Israelis. The Palestinian Authority's Cabinet two days ago approved a security plan to stop bomb attacks and rockets being fired from Gaza at Israeli targets. Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, was elected president Jan. 9.
``Abu Mazen doesn't need a period of adjustment'' before taking action to stop attacks, Agence France-Presse cited Sharon as saying yesterday during a visit to the Gaza border. ``It's not like he doesn't know what's happening in the field. He knows the commanders and he knows the people.''
The Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades leader in Jenin said yesterday his group will end attacks on Israelis, according to Haaretz. Last Updated: January 18, 2005 20:54 EST
