Security sources in southern Lebanon said the Israeli planes flew several rounds over regions near the Lebanon-Israel border, including the disputed Shabaa Farms which Lebanon claims to be part of its territory while Israel says was captured from Syria. The sources said Israeli patrols and armored vehicles increased their monitoring activities along the border Monday, as Israeli warships were sighted near the Lebanese coast. U.N. peacekeeping troops in south Lebanon also stepped up patrols along the volatile border and flew helicopters in the area. In the meantime, Staffan De Mistura, the personal representative of the U.S. secretary general in south Lebanon, expressed deep concern over air space violations committed on both sides. He called on Israel and Hezbollah to observe maximum self-restraint to avoid any escalation on the border, noting Katyusha rockets were fired at northern Israel recently, apparently not by Hezbollah but by unidentified Palestinian gunmen. Hezbollah flew an unmanned surveillance plane over Israel Sunday. Israel said the plane crashed in Lebanese territory, while Hezbollah said that its drone had returned safely to base.
