NAKHAL OZ ARMY BASE, Israel — Twelve Palestinians were killed and more than 40 were wounded in gunbattles Wednesday when Israeli soldiers in tanks and armored vehicles raided a densely packed Gaza City neighborhood.
The operation was designed to root out Islamic militants accused of firing rockets and mortars into Israel and planting roadside bombs near Jewish settlements, the army said.
The predawn incursion lasted throughout the morning as troops moved in on a two-story house and masked gunmen rained down fire from adjacent rooftops. Two men were killed at the house, and four were taken prisoner. Troops then blew up the house.
Bystanders trapped by heavy gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades crouched behind cars and hid in doorways. Palestinian medics said that the dead included at least six gunmen and a policeman, and that at least three of the wounded were teenagers who were watching the action from side streets. The commander of the operation said that everyone killed was armed or was placing bombs to impede the invasion.
In a statement attributed to “security sources,” the Israeli army said that one of the dead, Hani Abu Skhaila, was wanted by Palestinian police as a suspect in a roadside bombing that killed three American Embassy guards in Gaza on Oct. 15.
