Israelis kill 3 Palestinians in Ramallah operation against Hamas
JERUSALEM (CNN) --Working in the West Bank town of Ramallah, Israeli forces overnight launched a series raids against what it called the terrorist infrastructure in the community, killing at least three Palestinians in the process, an Israeli army spokesman said.
According to an Israel Defense Forces spokesman, the army is carrying out a "defined operation" in Ramallah against the "infrastructure of terror belonging to Hamas" -- a Palestinian militant group.
Hamas has been labeled by the U.S. State Department as a terrorist organization. The group's military wing, Izzedine al Qassam, has admitted responsibility for terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians as well as attacks against the Israeli military.
The Ramallah raid began around midnight and was being carried out by Israeli special forces, operating on intelligence information, the spokesman said.
Troops are searching for and arresting members of Hamas that IDF said belongs to a terror infrastructure that is directly responsible for the deaths of 68 Israelis in various attacks.
The Israeli army said dozens of operatives have been arrested and troops have discovered a lab that included two explosive devices and other explosive materials. The IDF blew up the lab.
According to Palestinian security sources, about 90 Israeli army jeeps poured into Ramallah in the middle of the night as Israeli troops began house-to-house searches.
The security sources said Sheikh Fadel Hamdan, who was wanted by the Israelis, was arrested along with several other Hamas members.
According to the Israeli army, Palestinian officials were warned about the operation and were told that it was not aimed at Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat.
An army spokesman said three Palestinians were killed in two incidents after Israeli troops returned their fire.
