4 Palestinians Killed in Clash with Israeli Forces VOA News 11 Dec 2003, 10:01 UTC Palestinian hospital officials say four Palestinians were killed and at least 12 others were wounded Thursday, during a clash with Israeli forces in the Rafah refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian witnesses say the clash broke out when Israeli troops entered the refugee camp early this morning and encircled two houses. Palestinian activists threw grenades and opened fire on the Israeli troops, who called-in attack helicopters.
Israeli military officials said the troops entered the camp to arrest a wanted Palestinian militant. Israeli forces regularly conduct searches in the Rafah refugee camp for militants and tunnels used to smuggle weapons from across the nearby Egyptian border.
In a separate raid overnight in the West Bank, Israeli troops arrested 11 wanted Palestinians, including one woman.
Meanwhile, in another development, some members of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's coalition government are threatening to quit if he goes ahead with plans to dismantle some Jewish settlements in Palestinian areas. Earlier this week, Mr. Sharon said he plans to "unilaterally dismantle some settlements" if the internationally backed "road map" peace plan fails.
Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia warned Israel not to take "unilateral steps" outside the frame work of the "road map" - saying that will only bring what he called "disaster."
In an interview with Israel's Ma'ariv newspaper, Mr. Qureia also said militant groups will resume anti-Israel attacks if Mr. Sharon does not halt the construction of a security barrier that juts into Palestinian land.
Israel says the barrier is needed to prevent Palestinian militants from attacking Israelis.
