2 Israelis Shot, Killed on Outskirts of Jerusalem VOA News 18 Nov 2003, 08:50 UTC Two Israelis have been shot and killed by a suspected Palestinian gunman on the outskirts of Jerusalem.
Authorities say the two were shot Tuesday at an Israeli checkpoint near the Palestinian village of El Kahder. The gunman managed to flee, and the Israeli military has placed the village under curfew.
In a separate incident, Israeli soldiers raided a refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip, shooting and wounding at least seven Palestinians. It is not immediately clear what affect the incidents might have on efforts now underway to arrange a new Israeli- Palestinian cease-fire.
Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said he expects to meet soon with his Palestinian counterpart, Ahmed Qureia. The talks would be the first such meeting since Mr. Qureia took office more than a month ago.
Mr. Qureia met Monday in the West Bank town of Ramallah with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Egypt's intelligence chief, Omar Suleiman. Officials close to the talks say Mr. Suleiman has invited Palestinian militant leaders for meetings next week in Cairo to discuss a possible new cease-fire.
The Egyptian negotiator also held separate talks with the head of Israel's Mossad intelligence agency in Jerusalem.
