The planned demolitian has raised tensions between Christians and Muslims in Nazareth, Israel's largest predominantly Arab city. The partially built mosque is next to the Basilica of the Annunciation, where Christians believe the Angel Gabriel foretold the birth of Jesus. Christian leaders say building a mosque so close to the Basilica would be disrespectful. Muslims said they cherish the site because a sheik is buried there. In its ruling Thursday, the court said construction had continued on the mosque despite a stop-work order last year. The religious leader of the unfinished Shihab al-Din mosque, Sheik Nazem Abu Salim, said the court had acted under Western and Christian pressure and said Muslims would try to appeal. ``We don't accept this ruling at all. For Muslims in the country this is very serious,'' Abu Salim said. Muslims received loose government permission in 1998 to build the Shihab al-Din mosque but never received the building permits. They have rejected offers of alternate sites.
