Turner faces media storm over comments on Israel Thu Jun 20, 1:11 AM ET
Paul Bond LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Ted Turner on Wednesday explained comments he made to a London newspaper accusing Israel of terrorism, while CNN distanced itself from Turner's remarks. At least one prominent Jew called for Turner's resignation.
CNN said Wednesday: "Ted Turner has no operational or editorial oversight of CNN. Mr. Turner's comments are his own and definitely do not reflect the views of CNN in any way."
Meanwhile, Turner said in part: "I regret any implication that I believe the actions taken by Israel to protect its people are equal to terrorism. ... I believe the Israeli government has used excessive force to defend itself, but that is not the same as intentionally targeting and killing civilians with suicide bombers."
But Rabbi Marvin Hier, director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles said, "When he speaks, he's introduced as the founder of CNN and vice chairman of AOL Time Warner. He makes it sound like he's mouthing the views of the board of directors. AOL Time Warner would be a lot better off without him. They should ask him to resign."
In an April interview with British newspaper the Guardian that appeared Tuesday, the same day 19 Israelis were killed by a Palestinian suicide bomber, Turner said, "Aren't the Israelis and the Palestinians both terrorizing each other? ... I would make the case that both sides are involved in terrorism."
Some in the entertainment community were also critical of Turner.
"It's astounding that such a smart guy would say such a stupid thing," said writer-producer David Brandes, who recently organized full-page ads signed by dozens of entertainment executives voicing support for Israel.
Hier, remarking on Turner's statement of regret, said: "I'm willing to accept apologies from almost anyone. But he can almost patent it as a routine. How many times can a person cry wolf? This is a new low for him, and he's had a lot of lows."
