Arabs call for making boycott of Israel into an international campaign Mon May 13, 8:40 AM ET By BASSEM MROUE, Associated Press Writer
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Arabs want to expand their boycott of Israel and its commercial allies to a worldwide campaign against trade with the Jewish state, the head of the Arab League's boycott office said Monday.
Ahmed Khazaa, commissioner-general of the Damascus-based Central Boycott Office was speaking at The First Popular Conference for Boycott, a meeting organized by the boycott committee of the United Arab Emirates' Journalists Association.
The conference, which opened in Dubai on Monday, aims to advance the boycott, taking advantage of the widespread hostility toward Israel owing to the casualties in the Palestinian uprising.
The boycott office once blacklisted more than 8,500 companies and people, including Coca-Cola and Ford Motor Co.. But its influence waned after Egypt and Jordan signed peace treaties with Israel and the Palestinians embarked on a peace process.
Hard-line Arab states, such as Syria, are now seeking to revive the blacklist. However, Monday's conference drew only 25 participants — intellectuals and boycott activists.
"We are seeking to develop the boycott so that it becomes an international boycott," Khazaa said.
"What happened in Palestine had a reaction around the world, all over the world. We haven't exploited this solidarity," Khazaa said, referring to the uprising.
He said Arab legislators and NGO workers would try to engage sympathetic political parties and international organizations.
Asked whether the boycott could be made effective, Khazaa said: "The road of struggle is long." He did not elaborate.
The head of the UAE journalists' boycott committee, Aisha al-Naimmi, said Arabs should set up committees to make ensure Israeli products are not smuggled into Arab states "under different names and from different countries."
