Iraqi scientist surrenders; Suicide vests found in Iraqi school 4/13/2003 3:39 PM By: Staff and Wire reports
Head advisor on chemical and biological weapons surrenders
BAGHDAD, Iraq – U.N. weapons inspectors call him "a really big fish.'' A U.S. intelligence official said he's extremely important because he's expected to know where Iraq's weapons are hidden.
They're reacting to the surrender of Saddam Hussein's science adviser, Lt. Gen. Amer al-Saadi, to U.S. officials. Al-Saadi was Saddam's point man on chemical and biological weapons.
Al-Saadi said he has no information on Saddam's whereabouts and insists that Iraq has no weapons of mass destruction.
A spokesman for the U.N. weapons inspection team described al-Saadi as "a really big fish,'' but said he doesn't know whether al-Saadi will say anything or "just stick to his guns.''
A U.S. intelligence official characterized al-Saadi's surrender as extremely important. The official said al-Saadi is expected to know where weapons are hidden, how many of each type were produced, and possibly the whereabouts of other weapons scientists.
Suicide vests found in school
Weapons patrols throughout Iraq's capital city turned up a chilling discovery Saturday.
Marines found 300 suicide vests in a Baghdad school. These type of vests are used by suicide bombers.
And elsewhere in Baghdad, the looting continued: This time the target was the Ministry of Information, located in the heart of the Iraqi capital.
After stealing anything they could get their hands on, the looters set the building on fire.
