A U.S. official said on Tuesday that suspicions had been raised by an Iraqi order of 1.25 million doses of atropine from Turkey. The New York Times said the United States was pressing Ankara to stop the sales. Washington is considering military action against Iraq over allegations it is developing weapons of mass destruction, including chemical agents. Iraq has just agreed to adhere to a U.N. resolution demanding it allow U.N. weapons inspectors unfettered access to search the country for such weapons. A senior official at the Turkish Health Ministry, which would normally approve such sales, said authorities knew nothing of any such order. "No official request has come and no official trade has taken place but we know that other countries carry out unofficial trade. It may have been met by other means," Sefer Aycan, ministry undersecretary, told the Anatolian news agency. Representatives of the Turkish pharmaceutical industry were also quoted by Anatolian as saying they had received no such orders. NATO member Turkey allows U.S. warplanes to use a base in the south to patrol a no-fly zone over northern Iraq and Washington is expected to seek more support from Ankara if it does go to war against Iraq.
