A U.S. source close to the Iraqi opposition movement said Tenet had an explicit message for the fractious Kurdish separatists that the CIA hopes will become a base for an opposition military force like Afghanistan’s Northern Alliance. “The message to the Kurds was: You are either with us or against us,” the source said. Meanwhile, an Iraqi Kurdish source told London’s Arabic language Al-Sharq al-Awsat that the meeting included U.S. military commanders and State Department officials, in addition to Tenet and CIA officials. The meetings included sessions with Masud Barzani, leader of the Kurdish Democratic Party, and Jalal Talabani, leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. The three days of meetings ended April 19.
