Ancient Iraqi seals recovered in Phila.

The FBI in Philadelphia announced today the recovery of eight ancient Iraqi cylinder seals which had been looted from an archaeological site near Babylon.

The seals, which are believed to have been crafted between 3500 B.C and 2500 B.C. in Mesopotamia, were purchased by a U.S. Marine from a vendor selling trinkets in Iraq, the FBI said.

When the unidentified Marine returned to the U.S., he had the seals evaluated by an archaeologist, the FBI said. When he discovered their value, the Marine turned them over to the FBI, authorities said.

The seals, carved pieces of stone used to mark documents, were returned to the FBI in Philadelphia because it is the headquarters of the bureau's new Art Crime Team.

The FBI said in a statement today that the recovery of the looted cultural property from Iraq was the first of its kind.

A ceremony offering the return of the seals to the Iraqi ambassador is scheduled for Wednesday at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Before the seals are returned to Iraq, they will be displayed in an exhibit at the museum.
