McPherson may help rebuild Iraq
(East Lansing, April 17, 2003, 6:03 p.m.) The President of Michigan State University will play a crucial role in the financial reconstruction of Iraq.
According to a variety of sources, including the Associated Press and the Financial Times out of London, Peter McPherson, a man with impressive credentials in international banking, will help set up a system for Iraq to operate as a free market economy.
The AP and the Financial Times say it's a done deal, the university isn't saying anything just yet. MSU officials tell 24 Hour News 8 that Washington is consulting with President Peter McPherson but no decision has been made officially.
The Bush Administration is talking to McPherson about working as a liaison between Secretary of Treasury John Snow and the military in Iraq to help rebuild Iraq's economy. Vice President of MSU Relations Terry Denbow says if McPherson does take this job, it doesn't mean he won't continue as MSU President.
MSU says it isn't surprised by this offer. McPherson has all the qualifications necessary including being a former Treasury Department official for the Reagan Administration.
