Haiti: Protesters call for Aristide return

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, July 16 (UPI) -- Thousands of Haitian protesters gathered in Port-au-Prince to demanded the return of exiled President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

Supporters of Aristide, who left the country in February 2004 amid a rebel uprising, converged on the capital in mostly peaceful protests Saturday, though there were some confrontations with riot police, Haitian radio reported.

Following the former president's departure, the Caribbean nation was ruled by a transitional government until free elections earlier this year.

Former President Rene Preval and one-time Aristide supporter won the vote, though some protesters said they elected Preval so Aristide might return to rule.
