French, US land in Haiti
28/02/2004 19:08 - (SA)

Port-Au-Prince - A French Army Transall plane and two US Air Force C-130 transport planes landed on Saturday at the airport in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, witnesses said.

A convoy of eight vehicles left the airport for the French embassy here following the arrival of the French plane.

A smaller American convoy left the airport for an unknown destination.

The two C-130s left after a short time on the ground.

Many foreign nationals have been blocked in the capital after airlines canceled flights amid security concerns, with armed rebels, who have been demanding that President Jean Bertrand Aristide step down, closing in.

Only military flights and some charter services are still in operation, including military flights supplying Marines tightening security at the US embassy.
